Ruhlman
finishes 8th in the ‘Dream’ race at Eldora
(
Brian Ruhlman, piloting the #11 Lawrence Motorsports late model, qualified 26th quickest of the 144 car field with a time of 15.609 at Eldora Speedway’s Dirt Late Model Dream race this past weekend. Scattered showers throughout the weekend made for a lightning fast racetrack.
Saturday, Brian lined up on the pole of the second heat race. Brian battled a very tight racecar due to the tire compound he selected. Brian fell back to 4th position early in the race. After scraping the outside wall several times, part of the rear spoiler tore away, loosening the car enough to improve the handling. Brian was able to re-pass the 2004 Dream race winner, Darrell Lanigan, in the closing laps to finish in the 3rd and final transfer spot for the feature event. This lined him up on the outside of row 7 for the 100 lap feature event.
At the start of the race, slight contact with another car caused the sheet metal in front of the left rear tire to start rubbing the tire. A red flag was thrown on lap 17 for a multi-car wreck, allowing crew members to come onto the racetrack and make changes to the cars, except for tire changes. Brian’s crew, including car owner Mike “Saus” Lawrence, was able to pull the bent sheet metal away from the left rear tire during the red flag. The crew was relieved that the red flag happened when it did because the sheet metal would have cut the tire down in a few more laps if the red flag had not occurred. Many of the top running cars fell out of the race with tire problems so Brian drove somewhat conservatively to keep the right rear tire from blistering and blowing out. Brian finished 8th after Jerry Rice was disqualified for being light at the scales.
Brian’s 8th place finish in the Dream race moved him into the lead in the Eldora point standings. This puts Ruhlman on top of both the ALMS and Eldora point standings.
Wednesday, the team participated in the Nextel Prelude to the Dream race at Eldora Speedway. This was a charity event to raise money for the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Fourteen drivers from Nextel Cup, World of Outlaws, and NHRA competed in the event. The blue #49 late model was driven by NHRA funny car driver Ron Capps. The black #11 Lawrence Motorsports late model was driven by Nextel Cup and former World of Outlaws driver Dave Blaney. Dave Blaney finished 6th and Ron Capps finished 9th in the 25 lap feature event. Both Lawrence Motorsports and Brian Ruhlman Racing would like to thank Ron and Dave for making it an enjoyable and memorable night for all. Pictures from the night can be seen on Brian’s website later this week.
Next weekend, the ALMS will be in action once again at I-96
